Empty Rifts Of Tranquil Thoughts by George Papajohn published on 2015-11-24T04:55:53Z Rather than focusing on driving the listener to a conclusion, Empty Rifts of Tranquil Thoughts focuses on the process. In that sense, it draws off of traditional Eastern ideals of living in the present. The piece begins very simple, folk-like, out of nothing. It could almost be interpreted as tonal in its opening. Constantly continuing with ambiguity of tonality or lack thereof, it progresses, shifting between incredibly simple and very complex passages, yet always leaning forward until it grows a moving climax. The piece then fades back, attempting to grow again, but it fades away, reminiscing, at points, almost singing, until it fades to the nothingness from whence it came.
