Musicians often labor in finding and developing their own individuality, struggling through infinite styles and sounds found in today’s music industry. Others seem to seemingly burst onto the scene knowing exactly who they are and what type of musician they aspire to be, this is Gavin Crow. Gavin is a talented singer/songwriter whose music includes a distinctive splash of soul mixed with the vibrant sound of R&B. His debut cover, ‘I’m in the Mood,’ delivers the smooth soulful lyrics of Brian McKnight, showcasing Gavin’s sensual composition, spot-on falsetto, and occasional growl, effortlessly separating him from others. He is definitely one to watch.
Gavin was propelled into the music scene paying his dues first spending time in the street dance scene, then adding singing arrangements with his unique dance moves for a variety of local venues and talent shows. “When looking back on those days, I realize how much my musical style was influenced by the music and culture of street dancing.”
His melodic marriage of a soft falsetto and raspy growl soon captivated audiences wherever he performed. In no time, he drew the attention of known stage performers and became the opening act for a number of these performers around his hometown of Bournemouth, UK.
He was evolving as an artist. “It was an exciting time for me. I became influenced not only by Brian McKnight, but Justin Timberlake, Teddy Pendergrass, and Michael Jackson. My confidence grew as I watched these artists. I learned to command the stage on my own. It was then, I made the decision to seriously pursue my dream of a career in music.”
Virtually overnight, Gavin Crow stormed the London scene joining a three-piece male vocal group called 3 Play. The group immediately brought Gavin into their studio, jamming, bouncing around creative ideas and writing songs for their performances. He and the group then hit the UK Garage scene, playing numerous gigs throughout the London club scene, including a tour in Ayia Napa during which they promoted their first single. 3 Play headed back to the studio where they began recording a number of songs, along with what was to be their first big hit, ‘Baby Mother’, followed by ‘Girl in the Taxi’, which landed in the UK record stores. ‘Baby Mother’ was also featured on DJ Luck and MC Neat’s Volume III album. After the Garage scene began to dry up, the band members found themselves going in different musical directions.
The demise of the band was Gavin’s opportunity to develop as a solo artist, allowing him more creative freedom to pursue his passion for music. He began collaborating with artists and producers within both the UK and the US, spanning a variety of musical genres. During this period Gavin rediscovered his love of Gospel music and expanded his vocal talents under the tutelage of producer and artist James Anthony. Asked what inspired and motivated him Gavin replied, ”My deep-rooted inspiration of believing in ones self has been a tremendous benefit. I also discovered that when ones opens their mind, they can find inspiration from anything or anyone.”
Currently, Gavin is spending time in the studio working on his debut album, pulling together a selection and variety of R&B sounds. “I love being in the studio. It’s basically where I allow my music to flow and where I am able to truly express myself.” While not in the studio, Gavin continues to perform gifting his sophisticated, emotion-laden musical talents to captivated audiences throughout the UK. He has begun to make a name for himself as a solo performer with a wide-ranging and devoted following. Gavin Crow stands outs from the crowd with his unique vibe and flare.
