Dual-bass-led noise-pop terrorists EXIT_INTERNATIONAL (E_I) unleashed the follow-up to 2011's critically acclaimed, Welsh Music Prize-nominated 'Black Junk' in March 2014. For this album, the band decided to free themselves of label ties, and 'OUR SCIENCE IS GOLDEN' was recorded with funding from the PledgeMusic direct-to-fan platform, powered by E_I's rabid, culty, global fan base (search for 'EXIT_INTERNATIONAL ARE WANKERS'). E_I reached their target funding for the project in just over an hour, and the following week they recorded Our Science Is Golden in just five days. It was tracked at Monnow Valley Studio in South Wales, with long-time friend Todd Campbell, while The Pixies recorded their new material a few miles down the road – that's one for the fact-fans.
Expanding on the scuzzy, schizo blueprint of the band's debut LP, 'OSIG' sees the band pushing away in every direction. It might sound like a sophomore album cliché to say that when it’s “popper (the band's favourite new material-describing adjective), heavier, darker and more melodic than before, it's WAAAAAAY popper, heavier, darker and more melodic than before” – but it’s true. Whether it’s the scene-setting pop nail bomb 'Weird Card', the feedback-drenched grunge-punk of 'Black Jesus (Pink Pound)’, the hip-swinging sex-swagger of the title track or the chaotic ad-libbed 'Juvenile Pacemaker', 'OSIG' is the sound of a band raising the bar.
When Exit_International formed in 2009, the rock press heralded them as ‘ones to watch’, and tours followed with Ginger Wildheart, Baby Godzilla, Monster Magnet and Castrovalva, along with hand-picked dates with Kids In Glass Houses, Pulled Apart By Horses and The Bronx. And that’s not to mention appearances on the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading & Leeds, Gloucestershire’s 2000trees, GuilFest, Cornwall’s Leopallooza, Merthyr Rock, as well as sessions recorded for BBC Introducing.
E_I’s reputation also spread far and wide when their paean to self-love, 'Chainsaw Song', was picked up by BBC Radio 1 for a week of prime-time airplay from the likes of Fearne Cotton and Greg James. Then they gained even more attention when they nabbed the Band Of The Year 2013 accolade at the Pure Rawk Awards last February, when “Who the fuck are they?” was the most-asked question of the evening. E_I were once again nominated in this year’s PRA's, for Release Artwork Of The Year (album/EP/single) for ‘Our Science Is Golden’, Bassist Of The Year for Fudge Wilson, and finally Band Of The Year.
