Short interview /
1. How did your career as a musician, Dj? How it all began?
Ed: Well, it all started when I purchased Plastikman Sheet One Album on tape back in the mid 90s in post Soviet Union era in Moscow. When i heard it, I knew I wanna be involved in the whole movement. But I didn't really act out on it until I moved to Los Angeles and got a job at a record shop and educated myself about all sorts of genres of music which I do enjoy now and till this day I work at the record shop. Los Angeles is my home now and it influenced me immensely because I got exposed to all new way of life, culture and music of course, for me immigrating in the end of 90's here was probably the best thing I have done for myself. Although it wasn't until 2005 when I really started to get my hands in to manufacturing records, Djing and making music. Same year I talked Anton Kubikov in to starting the Pro-Tez records as a platform for Russian and ex-soviet union region musicians. We were kinda the first proper Vinyl electronic music record label with proper distribution in the west by our family now, Kompakt.
Funny story about Pro-Tez records, is, that me and Anton wanted to call it Put In records but it sounded awfully like Putin records so we decided not to go with that.
2. You are one of the founders of Pro-Tez label, what is currently happening with it and what is the news?
Ed: Pro-tez records reflects my love for house music and we are going strong now. We are on Vinyl only streak and very exited about the rise of Vinyl demand and sales around the globe. Because thats why we got in to this whole thing, is to make Records, Vinyl is something that me and Anton love and cant live without. We were scared for minute there, that it all will shoot itself in the leg with all the digital revolution going on. Fortunately Vinyl sale are up 37% for the past year or so, its the highest jump since 2000's Its here to stay.
We have several records out now Jamal Moulay's brilliant Dub Techno record is a beautiful piece of 180 gram vinyl. Same with Harry Light's record. Also we have Anton Kubikov solo Album I the pipeline and the return of our favorite prodigy Mujuice with a Single that is amazing. Also hope that Maxim Milutenko will make a record for us. I know he will.
3. What is your opinion about what is happening with the club culture, and in particular with electronic music? What will be its development in the future?
Ed: Club culture in US is way different than in Russian or Europe. Techno/House clubs are rarely good over here. It is still in underground setting over here where illegal warehouse parties are the ones I enjoy the most. Be it LA Chicago, Detroit or NY I don't think there is club like Berghain, Fabric, Arma or Monasterio in US that people will stay there all weekend without a pause to be honest I am very selective now about going out only when its really worth musically for me, because thats why I go strictly for music not the drugs or women or other agenda. I think electronic music is going through hybridization now and working as a Buyer at the Record shop I go through thousands of records I hear a lot of music. Revival of Acid, Techno/Industrial hybrids, Uk House/Bass/Hybrids. There are a lot of really exiting experimental/noise and visual artist now that incorporate all that. Again like said I think is Hybridization Time. Also cassettes are doing a comeback which is kinda cool and strange at the same time. We sell a lot of tapes even manufactured several from Mount Analog. Silent Servant tape and Regis and some other cool stuff too. Also the era of Reissues is here, all these labels are cashing in on reissuing Vinyl that was hard to get or super expensive collector items that were lost in time. Which is kinda exiting. Oh and soundtracks on Vinyl, of course. The Future - I don't know.
4. What things in your life currently inspire you?
Ed: My Wife, my favorite place on earth California or and yes Vinyl Records!!
5. What are your future plans?
Ed: I have a lot of stuff going on right now and to be brief, of course work on Pro-Tez records and Mount Analog, but we are also planning to start our own Label with Lena Deen of Prologue. It will be limited Vinyl only releases and will reflect our passion for experimental/techno/noise music, way different from Pro-tez records. We will launch it in 2014. Long distance plans are to Open my own Record shop and to record a full length album.
The mix I have recorded for you is a collection of records that are playing in my house and representation of stuff that I am in to right now. Hope you will enjoy it.
Cheers and hugs everyone.
