EPM Podcast 151 comes from long standing techno artist, Madben. From his youth in Lille in the north of France and absorption of 90s techno, he has kept a fondness for DIY culture and a nickname that still smells of the warehouse! From long nights spent at Brussels' Fuse, Gent's Kozzmozz parties or in abandoned factories in Courtrai, he was continually inspired by Dave Clarke and his dexterity inherited from hip-hop, the craziness of Speedy J live shows or alien mixes by Jeff Mills. Since releasing his debut album on Astropolis in 2018, joining Laurent Garnier and Scan X’s secret Cod3 QR mission on EP7 and a forthcoming second album on Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio, Madben’s reputation is growing ever stronger. His exclusive mix for the EPM podcast simply underlines his status and depth of knowledge. From Kerrie to DJ Godfather, Avision to Pascal Hetzel and some of his own collaborations, Madben gets some grit under his finger nails with some brilliant jacking grooves.
By the mid 2000s Madben started to produce his own stuff, a natural step after years of DJing and interactions. Passionate about Blueprint, Purpose Maker or Axis Records sonorities, blown away by the technique of techno craftsmen like James Ruskin or Surgeon, Madben honed his music and spread it on a real time basis on Soundcloud. Motivated by his friends, he sent some demos to Laurent Garnier who instantly answered him: and aired one of these tracks during his radio program on Le Mouv, It is What It Is. Shortly after, the Madben counters went wild and Astropolis Festival, a french electronic institution, approached him when they planned to launch their own music label.
Madben moved to Paris in 2012, released some EPs on English labels and even composed music for television via Cézame. Total techno man, at ease in a DJ booth, in his studio or during a pure live performance, Madben needed a debut album and this came to fruition via ‘Fréquence(s)’ released in 2018 on Astropolis Records. With this definitive full-length, he consolidated his chiaroscuro techno, celebrating his mentors (Laurent Garnier and Manu Le Malin, both invited) and featuring Rebekah Warrior. In the process, both the doors of festivals and European clubs opened for him and led him to meet his new international allies: Maceo Plex recruited him in his team (Ellum audio family). With a successful first gig at Berghain in 2019 which has led to DJ sets at Printworks in London, Awakenings in Amsterdam or again at Berns in Stockholm. His ardour and ambition, combined with his all-ages audience, prove this music has always been and still is for everyone. 2022, should be a strong year for the French guy as he will release his second album on Ellum Audio!
