Now available, the 28th single from East Van Digital, Levrige "Torpedo".
Levrige is Andrew Erski and J.F.Killah, both of whom are associated with the infamous, rabblerousing SHAHdjs crew. Together with their hip-hop, jungle and footwork infatuation, their focus is on sharp yet soulful sounds organized in almost minimalist structures. Overproducing is not in their vocabulary, and thanks to that measured restraint, their unfiltered collective soul is truly allowed to shine on their latest single for East Van Digital.
“Torpedo” is a rather direct breakbeat number, in a no-nonsense sense. It wastes no time delving straight into its sci-fi laden atmosphere huddled around a groovy, lightly warped bassline, the likes of which harkens back to the glory days of speed garage.
“Maiko” starts off unassumingly enough. Only a whisper of a high-pitched melodic phrase and sigh of a pad breaks the silence, but then the rising lead takes seed, and blossoms as the bass kicks in. It has a vaguely dub feel since its beat almost sounds like an up-tempo Sleng Teng riddim, while the percussion alternates a frosty, refracted woodblock tone with teases of jungle drumming.
Either of these tracks could be considered the A-side, given the prowess of their punch. Doubtlessly, the taste and vision demonstrated here will have you begging for more Levrige.
