Dr. Skarabus aka The Lost Highway was born & raised in the hot, humid climate of Palm Beach County,FL, where music was an integral part of everyday life there. The major sound waves in that area, during these times, were Miami Bass, Hip Hop, Dance, & Heavy Metal. During these times, Dr. Skarabus constructed pause button edited mix-tapes for driving around & for Junior High/ High School parties, but primarily because of a deep interest in sound manipulation & a passion for hip hop edits. Dr. Skarabus, then re-located to Daytona Beach,FL where he became increasingly more exposed to performance art shows, hardcore punk shows, drum circles, skater parties, late-night rave parties & the local party scene. Dr. Skarabus had a deep love & passion for Underground Hip Hop & observed the lack of a true underground hip hop presence & began extensive beat digging & record collecting. He began to spin @ parties, night clubs, & local bars to try to interconnect w/ other like-minded artist's to help build a collective. After some time on the local circuit, he met local Hip Hop group "Spor of Righteousness" aka "S.O.R." & became the group DJ for some live recording sessions & a few parties, but then the group disbanded. Dr. Skarabus continued his passion for Hip Hop music but noticed the popularity of this genre was also causing the sound to become too predictable & conventional. This caused the transformation of a DJ into a music maker. The sound that Dr. Skarabus aimed for was an organic, experimental & abstract interpretation of the music he had a passion for, which was ultimately hip hop. He borrowed instruments, bought low cost samplers & drum machines & began making music combined w/ mixed media & samples in order to create his theory of existence on planet earth to communicate abroad. Dr. Skarabus began meeting & collaborating w/ other individuals from the Orlando,FL area, through constant record digging trips there, and also attending shows which provided an arena for others interested in the progression of hip hop & electronic music. There he met w/ other artist's & became part of a collective known as "Pinniped Psyence", in which the main platform was creating a listening experience that was not of the status quo, and to make moves to progress hip hop for the betterment of the culture. Somewhere during this time Dr. Skarabus re-located to Philadelphia,Pa. for about an 8 month period, in which he became increasingly more enriched in Philadelphia's version of hip hop & soul culture, and attending & performing @ shows. He collaborated & met people who would inspire him more to stick with the music. He then moved back to Florida for a few years, continuing w/ his studies & experimentation. After that few years had passed, he received an opportunity to move to the rural, mountainous region of Central Pennsylvania, for family reasons, where he has learned to appreciate the woods & mountains for meditational purposes. Although, Central Pa. is not a hot-bed for hip hop music, Dr. Skarabus still maintains his dignity, and has expanded his general understanding of the vast American social realm. A definite outsider here, & catalyst in many ways, he focuses his time on Social Services for the local community, family, & experimenting w/ sound.
