"Not everyone understands house music, it’s a spiritual thing, a body thing, a soul thing”.
15 years now since I picked up my first belt driven turntable's, Shit I'm getting old now!
Here is the story so far, for anyone who may be slightly interested, if your not skip straight to the music because lets be honest that is what really matters.
In my early teens I was introduced to Dance Music by my next door neighbour who used to roll home from raves at Castle Donnington, Fantazia etc, I then discovered the Essential Mix on Radio 1 where every weekend I would stay up until the wee hours to listen and record to tape (yeah tape) some mind blowing sets.
Skip forward a few years and whilst on a family holiday to Ibiza with my girlfriend and her family at the time the lure of Radio1 1 Live at Amnesia was to strong and we sneaked off aged 16. I just stood in awe with shivvers running down my back at the noise, scale and atmosphere.
As you can imagine this had a major impact on my life and ever since I have been obsessed with Dance Music and I have since been lucky enough to have been to some of the most legendary club events of recent times. Gatecrasher from the early years, Leeds Love Parade (the huge one at Roundhey Park), Ibiza too many tmes to mention, Back to Basics, Cream, Shindig, and numerous house parties and after parties.
So back to my original statement "Not every one understands house music", I feel I do never one dimensional, I love to push the boundries and dig back to the past. Disco, Funk, Soul, 80's electronica and Hip Hop where my good friend and DJ partner Nathan Loynes has a big influence on me.
I have never pushed for a DJ Career, I never got in to it for that, and the fact that the industry is very much who you know and not what you know has always put me off making a big push for stardom. I am happy playing to friends at house parties and small local events where I can enjoy the party with others close too me, that aside I have played at many local Clubs from Puro and Firefly in Leeds, Loft Escape and held down a residence in my home town of Pontefract for nearly ten years. During this time along with my friend David Kidd were instrumental in setting up the outside terrace parties nearly ten years ago where today nearly every bar or club worht there salt has one. At the time they were rare. The first event we did this people were (quiteliterally hanging from the roofs) hundreds dancing under the stars and the only time I have come to close to that feeling experienced at Amnesia many years before.
My DJ sets are never pre planned, come straight from the heart and whilst may be a rough round the edges compared to todays Ableton led pre planned performances but they come from soul and I feel that this creates the energy and reaction needed from crowd, however judge for your self and constructive feedback is always welcome.
Peace Love and Acid House.x
