DJ RYCH KYDD
As children, many young men have dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers and famous basketball players. However, if it weren’t for the dreams of DJ Rych Kydd, the world may never come to know this rising star in the making. DJ Rych Kydd had one simple goal – to become a DJ; and a full decade after he was bitten by the bug to spin records to the delight of thousands of club-goers, DJ Rych Kydd has emerged as one of the most talented young deejays in the city of Toronto.
Weekly trips with his Dad to the infamous Sam the Record Man once located in the heart of the city, eventually turned into diligent music accumulation well before he even had turntables of his own. By the time Rych Kydd was ready to head off to college, the call of duty to let music lead him down a path that so many legends had walked before him compelled him to use his graduation money to purchase his very own first pair of turntables. Deejaying has come a long way since its origins of mere “selecting” and “playing”. It is a technical skill that involves mastery of the equipment with the ability to mix, scratch, and stylize the event or listening audience. In a generation where musical possibilities know no limits due to technology, DJ Rych Kydd has had to study the best of the best to refine his craft in this highly competitive field. Among his influences are internationally acclaimed DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Premier, Kid Capri, and Funkmaster Flex, alongside some of Toronto’s finest; Starting from Scratch, P-Plus, and DJ Grouch. He has even taken advantage of university level courses, now commonplace with the mainstream acceptance of Urban culture including "Soul, Funk, R&B & Rap" and "Hip Hop 101 - taught by Ron Nelson at York University and “Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Funk and Rap” taught by Ray Williams.
As of 2018, DJ Rych Kydd’s portfolio is impressive with countless gigs at the hottest clubs in Toronto, guest DJ appearances on radio stations Flow 93.5 and Vibe 105.5 and internationally on SLAM 101.1 in Barbados (W.I.). Having been nominated and winning the 'Toronto Rated Next DJ of the year' presented by Stylus in partnership with Pioneer DJ in 2011, there is one thing he wants you to know – there is #NoKyddN.
