Alex Mos, known simply as Mos, is one of Portsmouth’s favourite sons. He first cut his teeth spinning beats on the island city’s burgeoning underground scene and pretty soon made a name for himself as a technically tight DJ with a diverse selection of drums to draw from. He’s held residencies at Portsmouth-based nights Funktion, Getaway and UP.dnb and has supported the likes of Commix, Logistics, artificial intelligence and sub focus to name a few..
A similar thing happens with most DJs of calibre; spinning rugged beats begins to lose it’s appeal and they want more. Mos started to gravitate to production and moved into more melodic, liquid territory. Inspired by his grandfathers jazz collection and D&B stalwarts like Calibre, Random Movement, Redeyes and Lenzman. Mos began exploring making that liquid sound backed up with studying music production and business at the Academy of Contemporary Music.
He got a few early releases signed to Dooh! Recordings and Soul Deep and then, fatefully, met Philly over soundcloud after liking what he heard and getting in contact.
Soul:Motion is two people, Alex and Philly.
Philly is the soul.
Alex the motion.
Philly AKA Centrik is one of those talented people that first picked up a set of decks at age 11 and never looked back. Hailing from sunny Farnborough in Hampshire, he’s been a fixture on his local scene for a while now with residencies at nights like Basement and Adjusted Audio. Much like Mos it took him a few years to get into production, which he taught himself. He’s a true child of the golden era of liquid funk, influenced by Fabio & Grooverider, Alix Perez, Spectrasoul, Redeyes and Makoto.
He’s also enjoyed considerable success as a solo artist with releases on Soul Deep, Celsius and Influenza Media and has had DJ support from Crissy Criss, Bailey, Random Movement and Command Strange. Then he met Mos.
About a year ago they started the Soul:Motion project and have gone from strength to strength. Their styles have a large area of overlap but they both bring their unique skills to the table to create stunning, intricate liquid drum and bass.
Their first release as Soul:Motion was released through rising label Inform Records and they’ve racked up an impressive string of signings on labels like Fokuz, Soul Deep Recordings, Influenza, Phuzion and Redeye’s Vandal imprint. Alongside this they’ve been played by stellar artists like Lenzman, Command Strange, Redeyes, Etherwood, Technimatic, Atlantic Connection, Nookie, Dj Fu and Utah Jazz.
This looks set to be a big year for the boys, with some massive things in the pipeline and their sound rapidly maturing they’re primed and ready to break out onto the scene and pack some much needed soul back into D&B.
