DJ Mike Márquez

A product of the gritty Brooklyn streets, Márquez's love of music and DJ’ing began at the tender age of 6 years old. Remembering the days of playing two copies of Lime's 1985 hit "Unexpected Lovers” that his father had, Márquez tells the story of sneaking into his father’s collection and imitating him:

“I didn't know I was flanging the records, but I loved the sound it made when you played them at the same time. I would play with them on both turntables and just imitate what my father did. I would try to knock them a measure off beat or what not. I mean I LOVED that song, I still do! That song led me into wanting to DJ dance music, Freestyle and really towards the upcoming House scene emerging in the late 1980s”

Although starting as a young child imitating his father, Márquez’s passion would soon drive him to opportunities DJ’ing in various clubs throughout New York City. His energetic sets would eventually propel the young DJ to clubs from as far north as Montréal, to as far south as Miami.

There is no shortage of bravado or gusto in his character, and that is definitely evident in his skill. Using that character along with the passion of that 6-year-old playing “Unexpected Lovers” on his father’s turntables, Márquez has shown versatility and a dexterity that has spread from his live performances, to his remix work.

Márquez's overall style of work is one that is sure to make his dad proud, but also, those that take heed to his musical prowess. From the Soulful and Deep House hits of today, to the classics of the early New York Disco scene, his is a style, that all in the dance music community can agree on, is definitely a breath of fresh air.
