Jazz Prasad aka DJ Narkotix (Bassdrop, Digital Breaks)
My love for Drum and Bass came from influential music genres such as Jazz, Soul, Funk, Blues, RnB, Hip Hop, Pop, House, classic 70’s and 80’s pop anthems as well as punk rock, heavy rock & indie music. I have an eclectic taste in music and enjoy anything and everything as long as it has a good beat, cool baselines and a good vibe.
My life revolves around music and it is something I definitely cannot live without, I’ve grown up associating songs with various memories – both good and bad. It has the supernatural ability to melt away the darkness and highlight the best moments of ones life.
I fell in love and became addicted to Jungle/DnB music early in 1995, I started with my first record and my first pair of turntables (old skool Sanyo and Technics belt drives). As my record collection started to grow I started mixing more often playing more of the darker, heavier tech style of Drum and Bass and used to DJ under the name "Demonik". As I got older and the sound of DNB evolved I began to buy and play the full spectrum.
In 1999 I changed my DJ name to Narkotix. I chose "Narkotix" because I felt that music was like a drug and also a universal language. No matter where you’re from or what language you spoke it was something that could unite us all and in doing that it could also change your mood. I associate certain songs to certain events and moments of my life, music melted away the darkness and made the best days even better.
My first real event DJ event was an underage “end of school year” party named "Absolut Freedom". Once established I had weekly radio shows on Wellington's Firm 107fm, Munt (Massey University Network Transmissions) fm and guest appearances on the legendary “Radio Active 89Fm".
Over the next several years I started playing regularly at various bars and clubs in Wellington (NZ) such as Traffic, Valve, Indigo, Mercury lounge, Curve bar, Attic Lounge, Sub nine and the legendary Studio Nine bar in Wellington NZ, I also had the opportunity to play fortnightly as a guest at the Uno Basement bar in Palmerston North (NZ) with the infamous DBR crew DJ/producers KRPT & Subsonic
I’ve been very fortunate to have played at some amazing Drum & bass events with some of New Zealand's finest Drum & Bass Dj’s and Producers including internationally renowned NZ artists like The Upbeats, Trei, Dose, Menace, State of Mind, Nanotek, Double Negative, Kanuka & Concord Dawn, KRPT and more
