Since beginning his career in 1991 as a radio disc jockey on KRUI FM in his home town of Iowa City, IA, DJ Earl-E has remained an independent visionary in Hip-Hop. Creating every project as a work of art, from the music to the album artwork and design, his analog approach, incorporating found sounds, and turntable experimentation, makes up what he calls "beats inspired by life."
His first album, Breaka Don, released in 1998, is a collection of beats, loops and samples mixed on 4-track tape, and features vocals from MC Prose, Juggla Vein, Vegas Supreme and more. His other releases include Environ Mentalz (2003), and Wax Onomatopoeia (2009), along with the Ep-is-Odes E.P. (2002), and Prose's debut album, Life Sentences (2007), which the duo co-produced.
His style on the turntables is diverse and eclectic, pulling from an extensive vinyl collection of hip-hop, reggae, house, funk, soul, jazz and more for his mixes. He has been heard at at clubs like First Ave. in Minneapolis, The Beat Oven in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and underground spots like Project Blowed and The Beat Swap Meet in Los Angeles.
Based in L.A. since 2000, Earl-E has also recorded and performed with several live bands (Soul Scribes, Rage Area, Calvin Banks and the Tellers), taking the stage at legendary clubs such as The Viper Room, The Whisky A Go-Go, the Roxy, and House of Blues, and regularly adds his percussion and harmonica talents to the mix.
