After introducing a wide selection of talents from their uniquely creative crew with the label’s first release, Doggtown now offers up a debut solo EP from one of those producers, namely BeauDamian, a 20-year-old from Amsterdam.
Beaudamian is the promoter of Amsterdam based UK bass night Decoy and has already been signed up to Sony/ATV as well as Doggtown. As well as having played about with Fruity Loops noise music in his early teens, Beaudamian is also an assured DJ with lots of experience and an understanding of many forms of electronic music as is obvious from the hugely inventive, conceptual and cerebral sounds he serves up here – basically his debut EP is like the soundtrack to an imagined computer game all expertly crafted using Ableton.
He says, “the EP is my debut, hence the name “The Saga Begins”. It’s about a Japanese Manga character that makes the transition from living in a sweet and sentimental home out into the hard and cruel reality of life. It’s a development everyone goes through and is born from my childish love for videogames, television and toys as well as negativities such as anxiety, drugs and guilt.”
First up is ‘Hinode’, a spooky cut of scattered rhythms, nimble Anime style Japanese melodies and sumptuous strings. Like a fresh spring day it’s light, airy and beautifully sunny. Next is ‘Amuru’ a lively, vibrant and glowing bit of synth heavy bass music with an urgent Nintendo feel, classic video game samples and a youthful charm that is hugely infectious. ‘Majora’ is dreamy pop meets heavy bass and sees this EP get increasingly serious and involved. Like meeting a big boss at the end of a level, it grabs your attention with monstrous bass and skewed synths.
‘Tokyo's Key’ is epic and dramatic, with glassy melodies rising up and down the scale, fractured beats and diving bass bringing plenty of energy and druggy overtones. It closes down with the trippy psychedelic sounds you’d expect when GAME OVER comes on your TV screen during gaming, but then ‘Soul Calibur’ comes again with an energetic, mid-fuck sound of slurred synths, lurching kick drums and footwork inspired rhythms. Finally, ‘Forte Muller’ sounds like being taken to hospital by police escort, then soundtracks something of a breakout and finished up with and open ended narrative that leaves you suspended in pixelated colours and 8Bit beats.
This fantastic EP/mini LP is a hugely imaginative project that conveys tons of mental images as well as making you want to shake your ass in many different ways.
Doggtown is an Amsterdam-based collective and label of upcoming bass-producers. Doggtown is music and events by Guerilla Speakerz, Boeboe, GANZ, Subp Yao and Beaudamian.
