There have been particularly violent clashes between Russian and English fans. The violence has drawn attention to Russia's highly organized and secretive football hooligan groups, which are known as 'firms'. To learn more about them Helen Seeney spoke to Svetlana Stephenson, the author of a book called Gangs of Russia.
