Desperate Journalist - Kitten by Desperate Journalist published on 2013-05-28T10:00:53Z Out 19th June PRESS RELEASE Cristina EP released 19th June 2013 on major digital platforms Desperate Journalist are a band from London. Veering from gothic anti-ballads to driving disco punk, their sound is one of melody and melodrama. Lead track Cristina is a perfect three minute noise-pop record, literate lyrics about the frustration of settling for comfortable adult routines carried by an impassioned, soaring vocal, brightly anthemic twelve string guitar lines and a forceful, elegant rhythm section. Mistakes follows, exhibiting the band’s eloquent tunefulness again and leading with a punchy, disco-inflected bassline and beat; the lyrics all self-conscious regret expressed with sarcastic wit. The set takes a turn into more abrasive territory with Kitten, a ferocious post-punk mantra, its ‘Never apologise, never explain’ refrain building to a shrieking climax. Wait is a cinematic, gothic closer based around a lugubrious bassline and whispering drums with flashes of sharp guitars shifting between dreamlike cascades of choruses. The band’s first gig, in the appropriately contrary setting of a grunge club night, was rapturously received and since then the band have gained a passionate following from a series of intense and popular gigs throughout the capital, as well as releasing a self-directed video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLFRVPhgtqU) for the eponymous track from their forthcoming ‘Cristina’ EP, released digitally on 19th June.
