Derek Rainey Derek Rainey South Gloucestershire Having had two heart attacks (2007 and 2010) I retired and began getting back to creating and making music. In 1960's I was a bass guitarist with The Mystics, playing in and around Bristol and the South West. The Mystics supported Number One bands regularly at Bath Pavillion, bands such as The Yardbirds, Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Love Affair, Ike and Tina Turner and many more. I stopped playing/gigging in 1969 as i had just qualified in nursing and had to give my vocation more attention than my music and gigging allowed me to. I never picked up or owned a guitar again until about 2008 and decided to try playing a few chords as well as bass. I slowly found a liking for Guitars and now own 13!!!...I also decided to write my own material and was inspired to doing 'The Afghan Set'.....A Tour In Afghanistan...after watching documentaries on TV. A lot of these songs are very rough, my vocals aren't the best and my 6 string ability is nowhere near as good as my bass playing but even that is very rusty after so many years of not playing but, at the age of 72 I am having fun! Update 26/04/2018 - I lost 95% my hearing in my right ear March 2016 which has made it difficult for me and have had trouble with balance since then. This makes it difficult for me to play for longer than 30 mins at a time now as I feel unwell. All caused by a nasty virus after a bad attack of Labyrinthitis. Still trying to write and record but it is not easy any more. I was looking to form a band just for fun but never got anywhere with it so gave up the idea. There seem to be no one out there who want to play in a band for fun anymore, especially with an old guy like myself so my work is just for my pleasure nowadays. I have tried a few covers too but basically, this me having fun in my old age. Oh and I also run a world wide motorcycle club and ride around the country when I get the chance, usually once or twice a month. Update 26/4/2018 - stopped running the bike club and also had to stop riding due to balance making it impossible. If you have not fallen asleep by now, thanks for sticking with these words and I hope you get as much pleasure from your music as I get from mine. All comments are welcomed.
