Offenbach am Main
The speed of Heavy Metal and Rock, however, soon failed to provide the energy and drive that the young adolescent was yearning for. Fortunately for Philipp, Frankfurt’s pulsating club life offered this dynamic musical twist. Since radio stations such as Evo Sonic and HR XXL failed to transmit their tunes to Philipp’s home in a tiny rural village in the middle of the Taunus Mountains, about 35 kilometres from Frankfurt, he was only able to explore his new musical passion by means of a makeshift antenna. While his five year older brother, Marc, enjoyed the spirit and sounds of the epic Omen, Philipp had to be satisfied with his brother’s tales and HR Clubnight tapes.
In order to stay up-to-date with developments in the dynamically growing electronic music arena, Philipp embarked on half-day trips to Frankfurt’s vintage vinyl store, Delirium, to replace tracks such as ‘For Those About To Rock’ and ‘Kill Em All’ with techno vinyls that are now worth hundreds of Euros – ‘Audio 7’ and ‘Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass’. The cassette recorder soon had to make space for the Roland MC 303. Upon turning 16 Philipp spent his weekends in Frankfurt’s notorious U60311 and Bingen’s classic Palazzo, finding inspiration from Johannes Heil, Sven Väth, Alter Ego, Plaid, Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin and Christian Morgenstern.
Although Philipp gets enough time to play with high-end sound machines as a professional sound designer of one of Frankfurt’s best sound engineering studios, he continues his musical explorations with Ableton, Pro Tools and Logic 8 combined with a Mikrokog and his ten-year-old Roland MC 505 after work. When he is not working on atmospheric and ethnic sound structures of the Hessian wilderness or Central African bush nights, he can be found in his favourite German clubs – Robert Johnson, Berghain, Bar25 and Watergate – or in Spain’s Rachdingue, a club where he was booked four times in 2009.
The Taunus kid is not fixed on any specific kind of electronic musical genre. However, it has to be ‘straight’ and not without a certain hint of musical harmony, which is often provided by releases of BPitch, Cocoon, Traum, Get Physical, Kompakt or International Gigolo. Although Philipp’s most recent work – ‘Die Bestie’ and ‘Der Jagdfürst’ – have a clear microhouse/dark ambient flavour, it can be assigned to a variety of genres. Even visionaries like Koze would find it difficult to determine precisely which genre his pieces can be labelled with.
His sets, which can be found in the inventory of Beatboutique on shouted.fm, are known to be less progressive. In past several years Philipp has been able to make a name for himself as a DJ in Frankfurt’s Vinylbar and Tanzhaus. It is without surprise that a crowd of dedicated listeners regularly follow Philipp to Spain to go nutty on his deep house, tech house, emo techno and Detroit spirited sets.
