SNIPPET from Joe Rogan's Podcast with Duncan Trussell by Deep Schtuff published on 2013-08-03T22:31:42Z 3/8/13 Here's a snippet of Joe Rogan's podcast with Duncan Trussell. It talks about anxiety, people's fear of failure, materialism and the difference between a job and doing something that you love. (Here's the rest of the podcast: http://podcasts.joerogan.net/podcasts/duncan-trussell) This snippet really resonated with me. Just today, and I don't know why, but when I wandered alone around town to Starbucks, I felt particularly disconnected with everything around me. I felt this especially when I was in the mall. I don't know, everything just seemed so fake, plastic, purposeless, materialistic... It was just a feeling, but basically I felt like there needed to be more purpose in life. Moreover, just recently my friend sent me this: Him: 'For a lot of people, religious people in particular, they see purpose preceding existence. As in there exists something very real that is 'human nature' and from that flows purpose. You could, from an evolutionary point of view, define the purpose of man to be the purpose of any organism, simply survival and replication. But equally from that point of view you could say we only exist because we have those abilities not to deliberately perform them. That is a consequence of our existence, not the essence.' Me: 'So how does that affect your opinion on life? How does thinking 'purpose before or after existence' affect the way you think?' Him: '"Purpose after" gives you the freedom to choose your own path. It's more personal responsibility since it is up to you and not predetermined. If it was predetermined the first task would be merely to discover something already written. If essence comes after, we are free to choose our fate, or at least the fate towards which we will strive.'
