Metavanilla by deathcloset published on 2011/04/08 17:09:35 +0000 Around 2 years ago I decided to write a symphonic piece consisting solely of piano and strings. The piece would be a challenge to myself to invent new themes constantly without repetition, but within the strict limits of certain rigid parameters. For my limiting parameters I decided to keep the format "vanilla" at 120 beats per minute (two beats per second) in the Key of C Major (the most common key signature). Furthermore, I decided that the piano and bass, cello, viola and string sections would play the entire time - there would be no break for any instrument. The structure, however, would consist of a constantly evolving, non-repeating theme. I have always been interested in seeing how much can be created from a limited set of tools. The answer has always been, "Much".
