MacLeans Writer: Nancy MacDonald Interview by wheelerj28 published on 2015-01-24T21:43:47Z Nancy MacDonald, associate editor at MacLeans Magazine, was kind enough to sit down and talk about her article written about the racism in her hometown of Winnipeg. I was not impressed with the way she portrayed Winnipeg, and was looking for accountability on her words. Genre Winnipeg Comment by Doug_McF Although Wheeler seemed to win the debate, he is wrong about the situation. I agree with MacDonald that Winnipeg has a serious racism issue. Incidents of violence by natives against other natives are symptomatic of the racism in Winnipeg. MacDonald's article and argument would have been better had it examined the socioeconomic situation of the native population in Winnipeg and some of the causes of the embarrassingly poor living conditions. When a group of people are denigrated and systematically discriminated against, of course it will lead to violence, crime, and substance abuse. In MacDonald's stories, just because the direct cause of the violence was other natives doesn't mean that the root cause was not based in racism. I would go so far as to say that Wheeler's position is precisely the problem that Winnipeg has with respect to racism: denial that there is a problem at all and blaming the victims (as a group). 2015-02-03T21:23:23Z Comment by Kilma I can barely get through this recording. The way he is asking the questions is so wrong. It's brushing the issues under the rug. Yes there are oppressed groups of people around the world dealing with shit and this is a real problem within Manitoba as well. Was the headline a little out there? Well here is the thing, it's called "click bait" and that's not up to the writers, often it is the editors and people need to listen to the message here instead of ignore what is continuing to go on in this city. There are absolutely issues that are being pushed to the side. 2015-02-03T02:38:48Z Comment by Ckaz felt quite disgusted listening to this. Knitpicking such as this is a perfect example of the problematic view that so many winnipegers have. Sure, it was aboriginals that attacked Rinelle Harper and much of the violence that goes on against aboriginals is inter-cultural, but why is this happening in the first place?? Maybe because aboriginals respresent one of the most disadvantaged segments of population to exist in human history??? Has wheeler never heard of the term white-privilege? Are the concepts of 'systemic' or 'institutional' racism, as referred to below, that hard for him to understand?? Thank you wheeler for exemplifying our racism problem better than I ever could have with my own words. 2015-02-02T19:53:37Z Comment by Homie Slax Wheeler, you're my hero and an inspiration to us all! 2015-01-31T12:52:32Z Comment by Totem_Doodem @sabface: "racism as a first nation individual". 2015-01-30T15:21:22Z Comment by Mark Giroux The information conveniently left out of her article was obviously deliberate, why would she even agree to do this interview. How could she expect not to be exposed? 2015-01-30T05:59:04Z Comment by sabface @stra-nger: racism against white people here is very much a real thing, racism is racism, we get it too don't kid yourself. I agree that it would have been great for a non-caucasian to interview her. 2015-01-30T05:16:42Z Comment by user367986582 Everyone who denied that Winnipeg is a racist city is part of the problem! 2015-01-29T15:26:56Z Comment by Totem_Doodem They are both wrong on a lot of things. Another thing is they are both caucasian people who have not experienced anything they are trying to explain; racism as a first nation individual. Perhaps they should have spent more time educating themselves. There are a lot of gaps on both sides. 2015-01-27T19:48:00Z Comment by Lynn Jones 10 It would seem an apology would be in order from her and her magazine. 2015-01-27T15:52:56Z Comment by djrickydee Fire her A$$!!! 2015-01-27T05:22:00Z Comment by Dafoe Jen Great job wheeler. Nancy MacDonald just would not answer your questions. I am greatly disappointed in MacLeans mag for allowing this kind of story without all the facts. Winnipeg is not racist and I stand by that 100 percent. Great Job 2015-01-27T03:19:56Z Comment by Sebastienperth Serious question: Do you (Wheeler) understand what 'institutional' and 'systematic' racism is, or what it looks like? 2015-01-26T21:08:38Z Comment by Natalie Caron Martin A big thanks to wheeler for shinning light on this misleading and poorly written article. A journalist needs to report on the whole story not leaving out key details to sway the way people to interpret it the way you wish it to be. The truth will always come out - thanks to wheeler this time !!! 2015-01-26T20:30:37Z Comment by David Engel Good interview over a poorly written article. But Winnipeg DOES have a problem with racism. 2015-01-26T16:42:06Z Comment by Wayne Robillard @wrobillard: also awesome job wheeler, nail on the head. with this interview. 2015-01-26T14:52:39Z Comment by Wayne Robillard @scott-lobban: I completely agree. this city is racist because of reasons.... but.. NOT because of racist acts... just reasons. One of the most un-intelligent articles i have read. 2015-01-26T14:52:00Z Comment by icedkarma greatest interview EVER .. every time i'm asking a question in my head about this you coem right out and say it.. good on you! 2015-01-26T01:14:48Z
