Stampede is the first single taken from Didi's eponymous debut album released Digitally on Damnably 26/01/2018.
Didi’s eponymous debut is released on Damnably records digitally January 26th. The Columbus, Ohio indie rock/noise pop quartet recorded 9 tracks over a hurried weekend with friend and musician Patrick Jennings in Bloomington, Indiana in 2015.
Bass heavy, with intricate wonky riffs and a multiplicity of voices and insights, didi features three singer-songwriters in the band (singing both in English and Spanish). Their intersecting politics help nurture emotionally raw, honest songs fuelled by nostalgia and anxieties.
“Stampede,” is the first single and is based on “experiences of transition in love and relationships; of finding those who can help you find yourself.”
From abrasive to tender, sober to silly, the compositions are an abundance of ideas, intricately interweaving melodies and counterpoints. Core themes on the album are fearing impermanence, self-sabotaging thoughts and challenging school systems.
didi found one another on the edges of the Columbus, Ohio music scene in 2013. At University, singer/guitarist Meg Zakany and drummer Sheena McGrath began jamming together as a means of exorcising life's frustrations, then drafted in two musicians they'd admired from afar in the local DIY scene: singer/guitarist Kevin Bilapka-Arbelaez and singer/bassist Leslie Shimizu.
Initially self-released on cassette tape in the US only, the album drew admiration from Sadie Dupuis and enabled them to share stages with Speedy Ortiz, Sad13, Diet Cig, Jay Som, Tweens and Melkbelly. To a certain degree, they make up part of a young, politically engaged, Ohio Renaissance along with the likes of Leggy, Smut and Counterfeit Madison. Meg’s biggest dream is to tour with the Breeders and bond over accents with the Deal sisters.
Didi showcase at SXSW 2018 and their sophomore album is due for release in late spring with US & UK tours to coincide.
"One time when Speedy Ortiz was on tour, Joe from Aye Nako texted me, ‘Oh my God, you’re playing with the best band in Columbus!’ [...] Lo and behold, they were incredible—smart, weird songwriting, filled to the brim with hooks and harmonies and brilliant guitar playing." - Sadie Dupuis (Speedy Ortiz & Sad13)
"didi is a group that you stumble upon by accident and instantly fall in love with."- 614 Magazine
"[didi's music] exists somewhere else entirely, too: a place of tension. It's noisy pop music made by like-minded musicians, writing parts rarely greater than the sum but still autonomous. [...] Beyond musicianship is a dedication to inclusivity and accessibility; this is a band that hopes to inspire marginalized voices." - Remezcla
"They’re both loud and accessible, making them a perfect example of the emergent popgaze trend in underground rock. On their self-titled album, didi strikes a perfect balance of chaos and fun, like your best friend with a messy car who has great taste in music." - WZBC
