Program Note: "butterflies and permafrost" places the fragility and intimacy of an emotional moment against the expanse of time, here represented by the juxtaposition of an old song about conflicted desire against thorny atonal writing that teeters on the line between transformation and stasis, both fragile, like the wings of a butterfly, or the notes of frost on the frigid hard ground.
