On Joel's suggestion about going off grid, just be aware that in Canada, especially in BC, the govt is aware of this and doing everything they can to actually prevent this, via building inspections and bylaw officers. I bought 5 acres up in the Thompson Nicola Regional District and they have done everyhting in their power to stop me from building a tiny house and developing it off grid. They have put a section 57 on my property which means I can't use a conventional bank to get loan, nor can anyone who might want to buy this property. They want me to dismantle the tiny house.
