Crumplehorns are an original northern DIY band. Their style of music is difficult to categorise and ever changing. Core members David, Katie and Danni bring in other musicians as and when needed.
The band, originally formed in the ’80’s, got it together again in 2013 at the behest of The Nightingales’ front-man Robert Lloyd, who subsequently released our first couple of singles on his Big Print label.
‘You’re Alright Part 1’ is our 6th release. It’s available from www.crumplehorns.bandcamp.com in CD, cassette, vinyl and digital formats*.
The track features David, Katie and Danni, along with guest musicians Tom (guitar and drums), Julia (sax) along with an 8-strong choir. The sleeve designs are by Outlaw.
The song, originally inspired by a T-Bone Walker melody, was written and arranged by David and Tom. It’s a humanist song - no matter who you are you’ll be welcomed and accepted. Maethelyiah, singer with The Danse Society says of it ”Crumplehorns could have never found a better time to write a song like this!"
Crumplehorns’ songs often address personal struggles such as alienation, mental health and loss, as well as wider environmental and social issues.
The band are currently preparing for Summer gigs to promote the release of their first LP (due August 2017).
"Already receiving plaudits from Rolling Stone Germany, Crumplehorns remain UK indie’s best kept secret”
"This is new wave as it is and as it should be” The Cutprice Jukebox
"Strike a claim for being the best British indie band since The Wedding Present”
When The Gramophone Rings
"The first song that they played had a hypnotic, pulsating feel to it, not unlike early '70s Krautrock bands. The rest of set was a hard-hitting post-punk sound in the style of The Fall or Magazine, combining some louder distorted moments with more sombre, melodious passages to great effect.”
Yorkshire Coast Gigs
David’s music and art are grounded in post-punk and DIY ethics of the late 1970's. He creates instinctively in many media, including music, photomontage and painting.
Katie’s life is now packed full of creativity after a life of academia. Her passion is 5 Rhythms dancing, taize singing and dances of universal peace. She sings in a community choir and also uses her voice and movement skills for people with dementia. Crumplehorns is Katie’s first band!
Formerly of traditional Irish band Ishka. She is ardent about both 5 Rhythms and meditation.
Why the name Crumplehorns?
The band’s original singer played howling crumhorn solos and, over time and alcohol, the word became further corrupted to crumplehorn :)
