the Conscious Band, the heart and soul being born Jamaicans drums, bass, and lead singer is a Reggae Band that incorporates classical and modern sounds to convey a psychological relief through music. The band was first formed in the spring of 1985 and is based in Boston Massachusetts. Each of the band members brings a unique feel to music, all of them from different walks of life, though each sharing a genuine adoration for what is referred to as "conscious music". The band consists of 5 musicians including Errol Strength, the voice; Bobin Nicholson or "bassy" who's talent as a bass player has earned him the title; Tariq Nicholson, his son, and youngest member of the band is responsible for the melodic sounds of 2nd Piano; along with Brian Sayers the drummer, affectionately known as "drummie", and Steve 'the bubbler' on organ. The conscious band has expertly managed to form a group that not only loves the music they play but also the audience that listens. They are truly dedicated to providing a sound that is soothing, distinct and unforgettable.
Conscious music is the music of the mind. It can be anything built on originality that inspires more imagination. The Conscious band chooses songs with a unique lyrical message and strives to perform compelling music, that evokes thought in the listener that may otherwise not have been uncovered. As vocalist Errol Strength puts it, it is a "world wide language", one that is undoubtedly relatable. These guys are in the business of crafting a creative musical idea that embodies a sense of purpose beyond mass marketing. While they each have aspirations of continuing to pursue music beyond conscious band; 16 year old Tariq dreams of becoming a producer, this band has maintained an unbreakable spirit and drive to enlighten the listening public. Reggae music in itself is the music of the people, keeping us listening for clues and dancing for pleasure. Concious band has taken the elements of reggae, their personal talents and love of music to concoct as "Drummy" states "a food", something that you can't live without.
This band is no stranger to acclaim, boasting a long list of musical greats who have enlisted their talents. Reggae monarchs such as Barrington Levy, Beres Hammond, Lady Saw, Beenie Man, Coco T and Cutty Ranks have all been backed by the Concious Band. The band has opened for artists like Mickey Dread and Gregory Isaac. Not only are they a well seasoned band but they are also community activists, taking part in Hurricane Relief benefits in Jamaica, performing for the Diabetes foundation and "Stepping Out", to name a few. Concious band relays their message not only through their music, but also in their actions.
The existence of Concious band and their message is one that society has long needed; A group that not only entertains but also educates. I asked Bobin the formula for such a band, matter-of-factly he stated, "Harmony, rhythm and melody"; three ingredients that seem to also describe their sound. The Concious band is in tune with both the emotional and social effects of their music, setting them apart from many of today's mainstreamers. In fact, arguably, the growing absence of musicians like the conscious band is the plague responsible for the deteriorating state of social awareness. Life and music have ever been intertwined and as long as Concious Band continues to support the social development of their listeners; only good things will come.
