Cole Blouin Cole Blouin Brooklyn (*1994) dwelling in the mystery. . composerly artist's statement: In my work as a composer (and also in my work as an improviser), I am interested in the isolation and juxtaposition of temporal streams, and, on both local and formal levels, how these streams can cast light on a listener’s experience of being - in particular, the interactions of memory, sensation, and being-present. Recently I have been profoundly motivated by the work, in cinema, of Claire Denis and Bi Gan - in particular, their refusal to oppose sensation and narrative. I want to engage form, or narrative, as an expressive parameter, shaped by some underlying poetic or experiential truth. But I want local-level listening to afford the listener the agency to meditate on phenomena; to examine material with some sort of hypnotic distance. So formal engagement provides new questions, perspectives, angles from which to experience the local-level phenomena; the local-level listening experience is - potentially - an opportunity for pure being. It is in those states of pure being, of what Bergson calls duration, that we come to know - immediately, intuitively - how we feel. We may perhaps experience new lines of empathy, or self-understanding. And then, in reflection, we find interconnections between and language for these new feelings. In aestheticizing this process, I aim to consecrate effort, reflection, intentionality. . songs as Cole Blu at coleblu.bandcamp.com.
