Coelho & Ridnell is a unique collaboration of two musicians – one Brazilian and one American. Fellow guitar players, singers and composers Chico Coelho and Dave Ridnell met at a gig at the Tunnel Top bar in San Francisco in October 2010. They quickly hit it off, united instantly by a mutual love of the music of the great Brazilian composer Joao Donato. They soon discovered, that somewhere between Chico’s fascination with Dave’s native American music – jazz, pop, and blues - and Dave’s fascination with Chico’s native Brazilian music – bossa nova, MPB, and samba, there existed a common but very special musical bridge. After sitting in together at various local pick up gigs, they began to get together and compose songs drawing from their respective influences, creating a fresh sound inspired by the beauty of Brazilian bossa nova, MPB, American roots, jazz, and pop. Coelho & Ridnell’s debut performance, at the urging of friend Billy Cohen from Labyrnyth entertainment company, was a big, fun one, playing for four hours to approximately 50,000 people during the annual San Francisco Bay to Breakers race. They have since performed at such venues as Mighty, Cafe du Nord, the Boom Boom Room, Hopmonk Tavern, and Yoshi's lounge, numerous outdoor concerts in San Francisco and can sometimes be caught playing a small wine bar or restaurant around the Bay Area. In February 2012 Coelho Ridnell performed in Piracicaba, SP, Brasil with the great Brazilian percussionist Alex Calatayud and Chico's childhood friend, musician and composer Tiozao.
Coelho & Ridnell is winding up a full-length original recording with Celso Alberti, Victor Litltle, Alex Calatayud, Paul Eastburn and others,
