Meet CODREAD, the “Black Diamond”
Born on the 10th March, Pius Okaba, better known as CODREAD, is a sophisticated Nigerian Reggae/Dancehall artiste who moved to Johannesburg in 2005 to pursue a successful modelling career, working with huge names like Africa’s greatest designer David Tlale. Eventually Codread ventured into acting on TV and also in Nigerian/ South African movies, as well as directing music videos for top artistes and independent films.
A highly creative and multi-talented individual, Codread’s hot looks, innate style and charisma have made him a magnet for the sophisticated entertainment industry in South Africa and beyond, hence the tag “Black Diamond” given to him by a dazzled woman journalist after she interviewed him.
From a humble background in Victoria Island, Lagos, Codread studied Marketing before going into the entertainment industry. His music style was formed by influences from Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Yellowman, etc, with his own suave and philosophical outlook on life added into the mix to create a unique flavour.
Codread’s shy and reserved personality belies the fact that he is extremely determined and dynamic in everything he does.
Back in 1999, Codread was a member of “Beat Block Boys’, a Reggae/Dancehall/Hip-Hop group. Those early days were the foundation for a steadily blossoming career which has seen Codread release a number of singles which have received great reviews and airplay across South Africa, Nigeria, Namibia, and several European countries. “Sisi Nurse with Ice Prince,” “Go Crazy ft Terry G” and Ponroborobo (Da Suspekt).
Codread’s Hot Single SHE WANTS IT, featuring Momo Dread, South Africa’s Reggae/Dancehall king, is a very catchy anthem about women who enjoy the finer things in life. The video to the song (a Rome Media- Angel Works co-Production), which was shot in a beautiful location in South Africa, was directed by Pius Okaba himself, and is already on high rotation on TV stations across Africa.
Codread is managed by Bongifusion (South Africa), and his dedicated manager, Kelcy Holcomb says, “Our aim is to see Codread on platforms he has never been before, and to make him one of Africa’s biggest Reggae/Dancehall international star brands.” That dream is fast becoming a reality.
Codread’s message to his fans and friends all over the world is “Stay positive, believe in yourself, and don’t do crime.”
