When The Sun Rises (2016) by Ching-Shan Chang published on 2016-12-18T20:12:21Z When the Sun Rises earned the 3rd highest points in International Composition Competition- Debut Berlin Philharmonic and the 2nd prize of National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Composition Competition, the 1st prize, Best Variations and Best Tonal Music of The 7th International Antonín Dvorak Composition Competition, and the 3rd place in the Orchestra Division - Student Division in The American Prize in Composition Music Program Note: This piece has two main inspiration sources. At first, I was inspired by the process in which a painting was created from a dot in the middle of a canvas to a cluster of colors blending into one another. My teacher, Prof. Sanchez-Gutierrez introduced me to an extremely powerful film, “Ran” by Akira Kurozawa, and I felt that its storyline echoes my music as I continued to work on the music. This piece is based on a concept of order versus disorder. A collection of several pitches from one of the octatonic scales, presented as C# – A – C – Bb – Eb – G – F#, plays an important role as a thread that links from passage to passage to unite the music as a whole. On the other hand, a sense of disorder that flows among different instruments, poses a contrasting side of my music. The image I attempt to paint starts with an uneasy atmosphere, representing the dead quietness before the outburst of a war. The music centers on C# in the beginning until the piece gradually reaches a highly rhythmic, punctuated passage, imitating gunshots. In the climax, the music juxtaposes order and disorder, depicting war as chaos. In the end, the intensity of the music dies away until the ambiance goes back to tranquility, soaking in the air of death, everything seems to go back to order just as if nothing has happened… Date of completion: 03.09.2016 Composer: Ching-Shan Chang Performers: Conductor: Kai-Shi Fan Orchestra: National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra Premiere Location: National Taiwan Symphony Performance Date: 08. 21. 2016 ---- Ching-Shan is an award-winning composer, producer, arranger, orchestrator, pianist, and conductor based in Los Angeles.
