Chartwell Dutiro Chartwell Dutiro Newton Abbot Chartwell is a Mbira Master who started playing at the age of 4. Chartwell grew up playing for the ancestral spirits in his homeland Zimbabwe. After moving to Harare in his late teens, Chartwell joined Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited in 1986 and toured the world with them as arranger, mbira player and saxophonist. Since 1994 Chartwell has been living in England, where he has been teaching mbira at SOAS, Bath Spa University and many other universities in Britain, US and Europe. He has also been involved in many cross-cultural projects both nationally and internationally.
