Jj Chardeau
Dax
Singular character and cosmicopolite music. Arty-rock fusion or transprogressif baroque pop-jazz? This French irreducible does not care about labels and continued his creative madness out of time, the antithesis of marketing discographic and trendy buzz. Do not believe the hype!
Certainly offbeat, Chardeau surprised and out of place in the landscape. The look evokes jumble a futuristic Buffalo Bil, a surprising Gandalf (rock and leather), a SF adventurer half Corto Maltese and half Frank Zappa, or a neo-druid lost in the twenty-first century... This friendly weirdo who seems to come out of "Back to the Future" is - above all - author, composer, performer, Aries Aries ascendant, and he plays, among other instruments, self-deprecating and excess.
Chardeau is not like anyone else. Somewhere between Chicago, Gotainer, Magma and Genesis (Gabriel era), he delivers a retro-futuristic music. Flamboyant and powerful, rich and colorful. Captain Nemo of an unlikely vessel, he takes us on musical cruises punctuated by stops at 20 000 leagues in the airs in a symphonic and instinctual odyssey. Baroque and rock well. In fact, his music draws from all sources, provided they are good, his world is full of allusions and references.
Chardeau’s career is marked by several discographic milestones: "Escales" (with his band Chardo's Airlines in 1990), two official live bootlegs in 1994 and 1997 (Paris, Montréal), "Data Pulsion" (1999), "Hors portée" (released in 2005 in both versions, "Highlight" and "Instrumental session"), "Integraal" (DVD-Audio conceived in 5+1, but never published) ... Through all opus, Chardeau has always appealed to the cream of french musicians (Bernard Paganotti Basile Leroux, Salmieri Claude, Didier Malherbe, Bernard Lajudie, arranger Richard Aubert ...).
His brand new album "Resilience" was recorded mostly in Los Angeles with his friends Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu), Robert Lamm (Chicago), Brian Auger, and also Chris Pinnick (Chicago), Reggie Hamilton (Luther Vandross, Seal), Lenny Castro (Toto, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Quincy Jones, Wayne Shorter), Shelton Berg (Kiss, Joe Cocker) and Curt Bisqueira (Elton John, Nelly Furtado, Dave Stewart).
On stage, Chardeau is a surprising entertainer. He plays his show with gleefully, gravity, intoxication, self-mocking, melancholy, humor, cynicism and excess... His concerts are too few : "Jean-Charles Edward, calls" (fragments of the diary of a worldly Tintin), a rock opera created in Paris in 1993 ; "Chardeau, it's show" a multimedia tour in Quebec (the first "off" Francofolies of Montreal in 1997); some concerts in Berlin and Warsaw, a few festivals... Pending a tour in preparation for the Quebec, Chardeau has played in Paris in january and will announce soon some dates. Perhaps with Jerry Goodman as guest on a date.
…If Chardeau did not exist,
it would be invented!
