I think jobs are a means to an end. I support UBI though for a variety of reasons, partly because of the principle that everyone should have certain basic things (healthcare, housing, water, food, etc.). I don't think a jobs guarantee is necessary or necessarily sensible. Still, good to have someone to the left of me running for once! 2018-02-01T14:55:18Z Comment by gamerunknown There needs to be a solid conception of the origin of profit for such a proposal. Firms can temporarily make profits outside of the norm with novel technology, but as technology is diffused, the rate of profit is determined by the proportion of labour expended. Workers displaced from retail will enter other industries and the amount of labour necessary to cover subsistence will decrease, with the potential for more leisure given a social revolution. 2018-02-01T11:23:16Z Comment by Steplor This was a really good interview; Kaniela and Virgil both did a great job. I only winced (slightly) once, when Kaniela invoked "Econ_101", which I usually associate with online comments from low-information self-described libertarians. 2018-02-01T02:46:10Z
