I had to go back and listen to this again now that the military is warning people about potential mass shootings due to the opening of The Joker and yeah.. everyone has pretty much lost their minds. Are there disturbed people out there that may be triggered into action by this movie? Maybe. But the idea this "we need to talk about how the Joker is a white-nationalist incel hero" is bizarre. This thing where media types are writing stories that are essentially "Why Joaquin Phoenix Doesn't Want to Talk About His Role in School Shootings" is even more bizarre. People are blaming a movie, that hasn't even come out yet, for things that have already happened. They can't accept that society is broken and these messed up young (yes, often white) men are the result of that broken society so they do what they always do, find something to blame. In the 90s it was video games and rap music. Now it's The Joker.

Egh, this clip is kinda nah, man. Your rationalisations are just a bit much and gloss over the extremely relevant present day social climate we live in, which sees, yes, disenfranchised young white men increasingly radicalised on this narrative of a wider society rejecting them in lieu of unending bureaucratic process. But especially as a black guy, I've always listened to this show with a grain of salt. I find it pretty disingenuous of you to ignore the obvious implications of this film's premise, the framing of mental illness as correlating with criminality, and the critiques from people of colour on the sympathising of whiteness in film as well as the recent trend of humanising characters that by and large have never been given such humanity in the source material. It's kinda tiring to hear you guys spend so much time shitting on strawmen of online libs (while you decry them for fighting with strawmen) without really inspecting the critiques or asking anything yourself.

The big hubbub about the Internet killing "censorship" really just redounded to the fact that, for the most part, you can swear and be more graphic about sex than you could in TV and movies, and that's really it. Most sites have their own rules about what you can and can't say, and norms about what is polite beyond those, and they don't really do much to improve the discourse.
