Carla debuted in the UK as Lisetta in Garsington Opera’s La Gazzetta (Rossini) and returned as Serpetta in their production of Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera, a performance repeated at the Barbican Centre’s Mostly Mozart series. She debuted in Italy at Gran Teatro la Fenice as Daisy Park in Gershwin’s Lady, Be Good! and returned to La Fenice as Athenaïs in Cherubini’s Anacréon. In France, she sang the title role of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen and Angelica in Händel’s Orlando for the festivals in Aix, Marseille, Antibes and Chartres. She has performed Lisbon’s Teatro Sao Carlos and as soloist in a Leonard Bernstein Tribute with the Israel Philharmonic. She has been praised for her “vivid, fine-toned, accurately placed coloratura” (Independent) and her “clarity of tone and smoothness of line…matched only by her exquisite acting” (Opera Now).
Other past highlights include Cunegonde in Candide at the Royal Festival Hall in London and also in Malta for the Valletta Festival. She was soloist with the Royal Philharmonic and the Welsh National Opera Orchestra under Carl Davis for a concert tour of festivals in the UK and Germany.
A leading interpreter of modern and contemporary music, Carla performs regularly with Soundstreams Canada, Continuum Contemporary, Music on Main (Vancouver), and Tapestry Opera, where she develops and premieres many roles. She performs the music of Crumb, Scelsi, Saariaho, Leroux, Dusapin, Adès and Knussen, exploring the natures of sound and theatre through improvisation and experimentation.
Recordings include Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music with Chandos, Vivaldi's La Griselda and Sacred Music. Vol.3, and Herbert's Babes in Toyland with the London Sinfonietta on EMI.
Nominated for a Dora Award for her performance as Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro) with Opera Atelier, she has performed in their productions of Don Giovanni, Der Freischütz, The Abduction from the Seraglio, the Monteverdi trilogy, and toured Lully's Armide and Persée to the Royal Theatre of Versailles.
Carla has been on faculty at the University of Western Ontario, at the Vancouver International Song Institute (Contemporary Performance Studies program), and offers her Writing with the Voice lecture to composers and writers across Canada.
Recently: With the Toronto Symphony Orchestra: Richardson-Schulte/Dennis Lee's "Alligator Pie", Vaughan Williams' "Serenade to Music", and Boulez's "le soleil des eaux" which toured Europe. With Soundstreams: Tan Dun's "Water Passion", Unsuk Chin's "Cantatrix sopranica" and a Bernstein Tribute with RTÉ Concert Orchestra (Dublin). With Tapestry/Luminato Festival: "Tap Ex: Tables Turned" and "The Rocking Horse Winner" (nominated for a Dora Award for Best Female Performer).
Upcoming: Don Giovanni and Händel's "La Resurrezione" with Opera Atelier, Chris Cerrone with the Hamilton Philharmonic, and Rodney Sharman/Atom Egoyan's new opera with Continuum Contemporary Music.
