CappellaSanctaeCatharinae Cappella Sanctae Catharinae Valletta Cappella Sanctae Catharinae, Malta’s only male chamber choir, was set up in 2009 by a small group of musicians sharing a common passion for polyphonic music. The choir was originally part of a larger project of concerts and initiatives set up by local musicians as a means of attracting funds for the restoration of the Church of St. Catherine attached to the Auberge d’Italie in Valletta. The restoration of the church being completed and following much critical acclaim, the original members decided to make the choir a permanent affair. The choir’s repertory concentrates mostly on late Renaissance and early Baroque polyphony, with particular interest in the works of Palestrina, de Victoria, di Lasso, and Monteverdi. Now nearing its fifth year of existence, Cappella Sanctae Catharinae has gained a solid reputation on the local cultural scene with a number of concerts and performance workshops to its name. Of particular note are the early music concert with renowned soprano Dame Emma Kirkby OBE in 2012, participation in the first edition of the Valletta International Baroque Festival in 2013, and organisation of an open workshop dedicated to early music performance in 2014. One of the aims of the choir is to collaborate with other voluntary organisations, possibly by exploring ways in which heritage sites may be brought back to life not only by having their structures and artworks restored, but also by bringing back the same musical sounds that first filled them when they were originally built. The choir also seeks to involve itself in a number of fundraising events for both cultural and philanthropic causes, and in so doing bringing music closer to the community, while promoting excellence in music.
