James Parker - Serrat from Matters (Sarah H., June 4) by Can Serrat published on 2018-08-17T09:21:55Z My music pulls from a wide array of influences, from old time fiddle tunes to the American avant-garde tradition to Jazz standards. Recently I’ve been writing primarily for chamber groups, but have written for solo instrumental pieces, orchestral works, electro-acoustic music, and pieces with live electronics. I’m very interested in giving the performer or performers more ownership of the music, so that they have the opportunity to let their personality into their playing, which I usually do through the use of various degrees of improvisation and aleatoric elements. Here are some composers I like: Ray Barretto, Kaija Saariaho, Hans Abrahamsen, Leos Janacek, Edgar Meyer, Marcos Balter, Julius Eastman, Carlo Gesualdo, Donnacha Dennehy, and Thomas Adés. I received my M.M. in composition from the University of Texas at Austin in 2017, where I studied with Yevgeniy Sharlat, Russell Pinkston, Dan Welcher, and Donald Grantham. I earned my B.M. in composition from Ithaca College, where I studied with Dana Wilson and Jorge Grossmann. I love cooking for friends and family, dancing salsa, tango, or bachata, and learning about trees.
