Bulli Bainbridge Zain Calcuttawala Mumbai Inspired by artists like ‘Nujabes,’ ‘Robert Glasper,’ ‘Tycho,’ and ‘DJ Krush,’ Zain Calcuttawala takes on the alias of ‘Bulli Bainbridge’ to release his debut EP. Zain’s love for music began at age 10 when he picked up the drums, which was his gateway to the music scene when he moved to Bombay back in 2006. After playing with a few bands and then working as a full time artist manager for a well-known venue and promoter for a few years, he soon realised that he wanted to be part of the musical creation process. Now as a full-time music producer and sound engineer, having worked with local bands like ‘Spud In The Box’ and ‘Short Round’ and produced music for a number of commercials, Zain is releasing his EP titled “Just This Once.” It’s a concept album that tells a story of a night out and the various frames of mind or situations one might face. The album title sarcastically implies that good ol’ promise we might make to ourselves of never doing that again, which is often written off as a nothing more than ‘famous last words.’ “Just This Once” plays with warmer, almost ‘older’ sounds to give it its vibe; and each song has a clear space it wants to take the listener to. There are moments of relaxing, of kicking back, to moments that are a little more interesting and unexplored. There are times of excitement and of agitation, and times of relief or maybe even self-loathing. With the help of local musicians Sid Talwar, Rohan Rajadhyaksha and Jishnu ‘Short Round’ Guha, ‘Bulli Bainbridge’ presents his idea of ‘chill-out’ to his listeners.
