This composition began as a commission from a good friend and fantastic jazz guitarist, Denin Koch, for jazz guitar and string orchestra. When beginning the composition, I wanted to take advantage of the potential the string orchestra has in such a setting. My idea was to provide a warm, full sound as a background pad for the guitar solo, complimenting the sound of a clean electric guitar. Another consideration I had when I began the composition was the use of improvisation. This piece utilizes both improvisation and written melodic ideas, using both at once in one section. The written melodies provide a sense of direction for the soloist in moments of improvisation, allowing their ideas to inter-mingle with mine in an organic manner. The result is a jazz ballad-like piece that has a traditional classical influence. "When Its Over" conveys the vague sense of timelessness that one experiences when coming to the end of a significant chapter of one's life. In this case, the end of my undergraduate studies at Whitworth University marks the end of an important part of my life. While writing this piece, the emotions of this event weighed so heavily on my heart that I unconsciously wrote them into the music.
