Self-Compassion by Sarah Eagger - Thu 15 Sept 2016 by Brahma Kumaris UK published on 2016-09-27T19:48:06Z Self-Compassion With self-compassion, we give ourselves the same kindness and care we’d give to a good friend. Kristen Neff Having compassion for oneself is really no different from having compassion for others. It embraces the idea that suffering, failure and imperfection are part of a shared human experience and are to be understood and accepted as such. How does it work? First is awareness, noticing the distress, feeling moved - the heart responding to the pain. This is then met with a response of care, warmth and a desire to help in some way. Self-compassion is an inner strength that enables us to acknowledge our shortcomings, learn from them and make the necessary changes with an attitude of kindness and self-respect. Speaker: Dr Sarah Eagger is a consultant psychiatrist working privately in the City of London. She retired as an NHS consultant and honorary senior clinical lecturer at Imperial College, after over 30 years of service. She is Vice-Chair of the Janki Foundation, a UK based charity that promotes spirituality in healthcare. This is an approach to which Sarah is very much committed – one that enhances peace, love and compassion for the benefit of healing oneself and others.
