Book Musik 038 - IT CAME FROM MEMPHIS - discussion with author Robert Gordon by Book Musik published on 2021-01-14T06:19:20Z Tosh and Kimley are joined by author Robert Gordon to discuss his classic book IT CAME FROM MEMPHIS newly revised for its 25th anniversary release. Many have made the convincing case that Memphis is the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. It is without a doubt a cultural hub on par with New York, Paris, and San Francisco and yet remains somewhat under the radar. Alex Chilton, Jim Dickinson, photographer William Eggleston and bluesman Furry Lewis are just a few of the prominent characters who make the scene in this riveting book. Gordon has a passionate attachment to his city’s history and culture and celebrates those on the edge and those creating the chaos that make life interesting. Your recommendation for Dan Penn & Oldham sounds like a must for me. Thanks! 2021-01-18T18:02:58Z Comment by Book Musik @charles-olver-448934493: Great! So glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the intel. Will definitely check out that Penn/Oldham album. 2021-01-16T00:27:38Z Comment by Charles Olver Really enjoyed this. IT CAME FROM MEMPHIS has been one of my very favorite music-related books since it first came out. (There were a couple of companion CDs that were great fun, too - both out of print now, I'm sure, but findable!) Thanks to your interview, I now know about MEMPHIS RENT PARTY which somehow passed me by, and I've ordered that and the revised ICFM. Re: Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham - if you don't know it, check out their live album from 1999, MOMENTS FROM THIS THEATRE - you'll be glad you did! Thanks, y'all! 2021-01-15T23:00:09Z
