Bass is a Squier MB-5 on the neck pickup through an Ampex 350 with 351 electronics into a Fender Bassman 4x10 combo. The combo is mic'd with a Royer R121 and rigged to link with an Ampeg 8x10 cab, which is mic'd with an Earthworks M30. These mics are mixed about 70/30 and run through the Ampex again. Guitar is an Ibanez RG321MH on the bridge humbucker in series, through the Ampex tape machine and into the Fender Bassman combo. This time, it's mic'd with just the Royer R121. Then it's back into the Ampex. Organ is a Hammond B-3 driving the Leslie speakers ever so slightly. I ran the stereo mix into the Ampex as well. The guitar and organ tracks go into left and right respective inputs of a stereo spring reverb unit, and the output of the unit also goes into the Ampex machine. I set the drums up the same way I did on "The Soul and the Soil," but went easy on the high end and slammed the Ampex's input with the drums buss. My mix buss has a Urei 1176 and a Summit Audio TLA-100A in the inserts running about 1 dB of gain reduction on each (the 1176 set with a ratio of 4:1), and the output goes hard on the Ampex. Finally, Ozone 5 is used to limit the signal slightly for the digital world.
