Riverview KFN Language Translations Land Of The Great Blue Heron by BC Housing

“This is the audio translation of the term səmiq̓ʷeʔelə, a hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ term meaning “Place of the Great Blue Heron.” It is spoken by Chief Ed Hall of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm Nation. This is the name that the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm peoples used for a 244-acre site in Coquitlam, B.C. that falls within their traditional and ancestral territories. Since 1904, the site has been a campus for mental health and substance use treatment – it was called “Riverview Hospital” until 2012. Prior to 1904 and since time immemorial, the area was known as səmiq̓ʷeʔelə and was stewarded by the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm peoples.”
