Over the past month 25 people have died as a result of demonstrations. Are the protests a response to the country's economic crisis which has seen prices skyrocket and citizens everywhere forced to queue for hours for basic goods including toilet roll and butter? Not according to the country's Tourism Minister, Andrés Izarra. He told Newshour's James Menendez that the demonstrations were a 'pretext to destabilise our country (and)the hand of the United States is very clearly seen'.
