cinematic piece composed and mastered by myself using logic pro, omnisphere and kontakt strings
as per the competition t&cs, this track had to be no more than 2 mins and use one of the original stems. we could then recompose to our heart's content.
i took the drum stem from the competitions piece and re-composed the tune around this stem. the comp original piece:
track is 2 mins, but added some empty space around to make listening easier for the audience
i am composing this from my home in london, dual citizenship; british and canadian
for the supporting image, i took my time to choose a suitable picture from the film prometheus, as that is what came to mind when mastering the song. the picture shows a scary alarm of urgency to return to the ship in a isolated planet.
the piece is dark, with drawn out sub cello parts. there is then modern synth that pulses that lifts up the pace, but without too much over-produced sheen, leaves it more atmospheric.
this is followed by a quieter atmosphere part, with a disturbing siren building, a large metallic siren echo out, and what sounds like feet marching, giving a sense of distress and urgency, leading into the final large climax ending with choir and horns.
i wish to thank bleeding fingers and hans zimmer for offering such a once in a life time opportunity. such an exciting experience
the only obvious limitations i felt was not having a full orchestra sound out of kontakt for the ending. one day i might purchase kontakt's orchestra & cinematic (or equivalent), as the strings package i have currently is only individual instruments. that and not getting it mastered professionally in a studio : )
overall there were 55 separate pieces to make this 2 min piece
some details on the piece:
i went for five parts to this song, experimenting with sounds to create something musical while pushing my boundaries for originality and creativity as best as i currently could
first part -
start effect is actually a reversed cymbal, with fx chain - eq, amp, eq, envelop, dirmix, glitch, subbass, pitchshift, rotator, amp
then piano with amp overdrive, plucked violins, guitar with echo, amp, eq, trem and elec guitar. also bass pulses, choir and a cello crescendo leads into second part
second part -
bass pulses combination of deep air impacts and very low cello violin sounds, choir, fx, orchestral strings, acoustic guitar, hi hat with trem
third part -
has mixture of layers with automation to bring in and out a pulsing theme. some background fx using shepards horn with slight tape stop, crescendo cellos, left right kick drum with increasing automation, distortion guitar
fourth part -
atmopsheric sound using omnisphere, orchestral percussion, bass pulses, strings, siren effect (shogun flute delay), march effect (boom blip down), fx
fifth part -
two horn styles, shaker, deep atmopshere effect, choir, strings, fx, two part cello and deep air impact bass return
and a whole host of automation on nearly each of the 55 pieces
wish me luck!
