George Bandoek Apostolakis was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, long enough ago to have first-hand knowledge and be comfortable in numerous vintage styles. Also long enough ago to have enough time to experiment in improvisation and electronics, indulge in his urge to explore different sounds and develop a knack for unexpected sounds, structures and themes. A strong, idiosyncratic stage persona didn’t do any harm either.
A mainstay of the Greek eighties indie scene, he made his recording debut with the indie-rock outfit Noise Promotion Company in 1986. Between 1988 and 1995 he was living and working in London.
From 1996 to 2004 he was a member of Blues Wire, the leading Greek blues band. In addition he took part in numerous jazz and improvisation projects, from the fast-paced jazz collages of Mihalis Siganidis to the live improvised soundtracks of Sakis Papadimitriou. In 2002 he joined the band of the legendary Greek singer-songwriter Thanasis Papakonstantinou, helping to create what was to be hailed as a unique and ultimately successful fusion of modern rock and Greek roots. At that time he also started releasing solo 3”cds in an idm-ambient style. He collaborated with theatre director Simos Kakalas and the Horos Theatre Company, writing the music for three versions of the modern Greek classic Golfo between 2004 and 2007 and also appearing as an actor in the Golfo 2.3 beta version. Since 2004 he has also collaborated with the SineQuaNon dance company, the leading Greek exponent of contemporary dance, both as a musician and sound designer (Secret Supper) and a composer and musician (Homo Hameno Hamini). The musical and literary escapades of Tabako, an unorthodox accordion, cello, electric guitar and electronics trio, must be always mentioned.
From 2007 he has been living in Finnish Lapland, working in music education and composing music for plays, performances and documentaries (Kaamosvalkeat, Sota - absurdi tragedia, Koettelemusten Kaupunki / A Town Called Trouble, 30+ Sisarta, Itä-Lapin Talvisota, Leipätehtaan Naiset, Itä-Lapin Jatkosota, Johtajan Kaappi) . A member of Pekka Kumpulainen ja Ystävät, his guitar and harmonica playing features on the band’s recordings as well as the soundtrack for the film Kultajoki/Goldfluss. A solo live guitar cd entitled Fugitive was released in 2011. He can be seen playing solo ambient sets, either north or well north of the Arctic Circle.
He has performed live in many countries between Scotland and China.
Using power, feeling, humour and a disciplined indiscipline George is always searching for the sounds that make us feel things we were not even aware of.
