VFS and SoundCloud Full Scholarship Challenge 2011: An Imaginary Animal Being Born_Gordon McGladdery by A Shell in The Pit published on 2011/11/02 01:46:54 +0000 If you dig this, please visit http://ashellinthepit.com My name is Gordon McGladdery, I am the composer for the youtube channel Smarter Every Day and I've created the sounds of an uncuddly fantasy animal giving birth. I whipped it up upon hearing about the contest by manipulating a sample of a Cicada I recorded in South Korea and a sample a friend recorded of a baby goat being slaughtered in Sierre Leone (been waiting for a reason to use that!) along with minimal instrumentation in Ableton Live. The equipment involved was an entry-level Yamaha Audiogram 6, an SM57 and the goat was recorded on a Canon T2i. I know sound design and audio for visual media is for me because no matter how many other careers I try, this is what I always get drawn back to. It's the only thing that can hold my interest for several hours at a time, day after day. Simply put it's the one thing I've really got a knack for and could do forever. I already do some work in the industry, but I know I'm reaching the extent of my self-education and need professional guidance and mentoring. I like to see how efficiently I can reach an emotional impact or change. I also like to squeeze every ounce of utility from the few tools I have (hardware, software and brainware), so education is extremely important to me. I've wanted to go to VFS since 2002 but it has never been financially feasible, so this scholarship would be a dream come true. Cheers!
