The Geology of Media: Jussi Parikka by Arts Catalyst published on 2017-04-27T10:14:12Z Media history is millions, even billions, of years old. Arts Catalyst invited Jussi Parikka, Finnish media theorist and writer, to discuss the geology of media. Parikka argues that to adequately understand contemporary media culture, we must set out from material realities that precede media themselves - Earth’s history, geological formations, minerals, and energy. Exploring the resource depletion and material resourcing required for us to use our devices to live networked lives, Parikka grounds his analysis in Zielinski’s widely discussed notion of deep time, but takes it back millennia. This event was held as part of Conflict Minerals: a month-long exhibition and enquiry into artists' practices that explore the nature of conflict in relation to the use of the Earth's geological resources.
