The A-Team avoids all topical references (ex - www.bbc.co.uk) happening in the Canadian government and the esoteric allusions (ex - the Navaho (?) who threatens the A-Team on the evening news). Reference to the president's handgun is made but not the name: the president is shown to be from the Midwest, and ostentatiously wears his gun in a shoulder-holster. The team's headquarters, a farm, resembles the office of a character on an American sitcom, if on a nice enough farm. Patton's motoring excursion is reminiscent of classic American adventure serial BOPPY; TV's version of this genre are currently being made for the BBC.
In general the Canadian production values (except for the footage of natives of the area) look first-rate, and the cast and characters look and move beautifully. The native actors are good, but pale beside the savage, near-genitalic flashes of teeth and hair that the Hollywood cast sport.The characters are mainly quite likable and convincing, and though there's too much TV violence for children there's no teen-level sex or swearing. The main exception is Col. Lynch - a brute who moves with the crude stiffness of a man teetering on the brink of syphilis, yet who somehow plays up to an image of British insouciance. The team's US spokesman is called "Captain"...There's too much action for children - 15 seconds of a soldier being shot dead may cause stress, but the 10-second extra of a car exploding is too great a temptation. Anyway, the A-Team are more fun than any American motion picture heroes we've ever seen, and they are realistically wasteful, slovenly, and doggy, all of which adds a degree of reassurance about the human race.
