Moirai (2016) by André McEvenue published on 2016-02-10T16:41:41Z Moirai Program Notes The title of this piece is in reference to the figures of greek mythology who are more commonly known as the three fates. These figures determine the course of life and fate of every living being on earth as well as the Gods. They are the embodiment of the principle of universal natural order. At the time that I was writing this piece, I was very interested in the idea of art as a compromise between the will of the artist, and these abstract principles of natural order. I set out to conceive a form that adhered to a proportional ratio of 3/4s to a whole. I wanted this ratio to be represented in macro and micro aspects, so I attempted to work within these boundaries. I wanted to know if this sort of approach would enslave, or liberate artistic expression. In the end, I was surprised by the strength of my will to make decisions that I couldn’t rationalize within the form. And so I named the piece in the plural form, “Moirai”, meaning apportioners. Because for me it is unclear if throughout this creative process I am the leader, the follower, or both. Genre Chamber Music
